Crazy Busy!

To say I've been busy lately is an understatement!. I am trying with everything I have to do way too many things. On top of everything I'm so excited that my niece and nephew will be coming all the way from Australia for a 5 week holiday...very soon so we're madly trying to make arrangements for that time with them.

I've been shooting like mad and now I have a couple of weeks to finish up orders before they arrive. This maternity shoot today is one of my last to do. The only shoots left is the newborn session and a really fun, high energy family with 4 kids. I can't wait to do both of them and I'll be posting a tone as soon as I find the time. I have more maternity to show you and a two day old beautiful baby girl!

Introducing my newest bundle of joy...isn't she pretty!

...and together with her big sister...who has suffered quite a bit and was given an early retirement...

I have a very handy little tidbit...I found out, a year and a half too late that California Law states a consumer has up to 30 days to return merchandise - it trumps a 14 day store policy but staff will go to great lengths to avoid complying.

Say if for instance you bought a 20" iMac one afternoon and returned it the next morning for a refund [to purchase another iMac] because the one you have is doing weird, freaky, poltergeist things - you may be told it's a software issue and it is a simple matter of re-installing a few programs. You may not feel comfortable with that and still want a refund. Someone might tell yo you're not entitled to one because it's merely a 'software' issue and must be looked at by genius techs first. Amazing!! Theres nothing wrong with it! Maybe it was your imagination - after all, you are an artist!

You believe them and go along with it thinking you have no other choice. By day 15 and numerous appointments with the so called "genius" bar you may be frustrated and demand a refund. At that point you'd be told "I'm sorry Mam, we have a 14 day policy and let me see...oh, yes - you're at day 15, there's nothing we can do to help you. Did you purchase Apple Care? Yes, Great [you're going to need it]!". Over time to get to know the staff quite well - since you're there so often with you lemon!

Soooo, don't be a "bad consumer" like me and believe everything you're told by a sales person or a tech or any staff member for that matter - your best interests are not their concern! YOU HAVE 30 DAYS TO OBTAIN A REFUND

Wow! I feel so much better! If I can help just one person avoid a situation like this, I can let go. Am I bitter? Not so much now.

Yes, in true PhotoMama style I grabbed my camera at 2:30am to catch this moment - hence the ridiculously blurry image and tones of noise. Honestly, taking the shot was cruel and unusual punishment for both of us since he then thought it was time to "go dowdairs n wa a moo-v on tb". Did I mention it was 2:30am? He'd caught the stomach flu two days earlier but since we found this 'like new' tub of cookies behind his favorite chair - almost empty, we're not so sure it was "just" the tummy wog! Scary thing is - he had NO loss of appetite!

When I saw this little guy this morning I about fell over! He's got the cutest little face!!! Baby M. belongs to a dear friend of mine and as I prepare to begin the monumental task of catching up since my computer went into a coma, I thought it'd be great to have this little guy christen my new computer!!!! I love him!! I totally want to bring him home!! Congrats Kori, you've got some good genes girl!!

Side note...the color I have at home is SSOOO much nicer than the web version. I'll be working on that! I'm sure it's the click of a wee little button! I have it at warm and creamy and here it's well...YUK!!

Aren't these the cutest little things? It reminds me of raising orphaned kangaroos when I was younger and still living in Australia! Oh, I miss those little things!

Every year about this time delightful little birdied that chirp through most of the night are hatched! this year, with many thanks to my 100 macro, I was able to catch a glimpse of them! See if you can figure out the puzzle. Two are top and tail a third and maybe a fourth are squished beneath them! If the weren't so LOUD at 3:00am beneath my bedroom window they'd be more than wonderful but for now they're "just" wonderful :-) Love ya birdies!

We're so happy to have lady bugs nesting in two of our trees! What a wonderful experience it is to wake up in the morning, look out your window and see hundreds of them wandering around before your very eyes! I've always thought of ladybugs as good luck charms so imaging how fab it feels to find them everywhere ever day :-)

My beautiful baby girl lost her fourth tooth a couple of days ago. She came running out of her bathroom screaming MUMMY, I LOST MY TOOTH - I HAVE A NEW WINDOW!!!" It was priceless :-) I love Mummy moments like that!

OMG! Introducing "Pip"...for now. He's somewhat of a little known fella so I'll come back to him in a couple of weeks suffice to say he's doing a wonderful thing for a lot of little ones :-) Pip LUUVVVs us!

O.K. the pace around here is, well only something you'd understand if you were actually as crazed as I am right now! I'm seriously ready tho throw my computer out the window! Dearest Hubby, who's computer functions perfectly thinks we need to stick with this one! If he could only experience a glimpse of this craziness I know he'd agree with ME! And don't even get me started on anything else!

So thank you everyone who's patiently waiting on a gallery or an order, they're in the works!

As usual I'll be running out the door soon, waiting on R. to rescue me and come home early AGAIN in place of our apparently forgetful nanny! Thanks honey...but could ya hurry it up pretty, pretty, please!

I wanted to post one from a session last week. I closed my eyes and pointed to this super cute little darling! There'll be a lot more to come once I catch up from the 'crisis'.

Boy, has it been a long week! It's never easy trying to scramble around computer issues but I'm back on track [for now]! It's VERY late [again] and I promised myself I'd go to bed and not sit back at the computer. Let's just say tomorrow's another day! I've got so much to catch up on and trying to keep a balance between work and family can be tricky. O.K. I have to be faster!

Here's little Miss. Fancy Pants R. and her fabulously handsome older brother T. [who claims NOT to be dating anyone!]. This young man was a joy! He was so polite for a boy his age, I was very impressed! You may recognize Little Miss R. from my last post. She happened to come down with one of those pesky illnesses that we all hate right in the middle of our shoot! A few days later she was on top of the world and looking as cute as ever!

To clients who are waiting on prints and galleries - they're being worked on at a furious pace! Thanks for your patience!

This is Little Miss R. from yesterday...she's so beautiful and I hear she [along with Mom and Dad] suffered all night with a fever. I did manage to get a few less serious shots of her so I thought I'd post a couple before I take the kids out to lunch. Today's shoot was tones of fun. There was a very active 5yr old boy and an adorable blue eyed bunch of sweetness getting ready to take her first steps! I'll be posting those hopefully by tomorrow!

This little guy, Master J. reminds me of my nephew when he was the same age. They surely could be brothers and have the same tendencies to laugh and eat one's hands! Luckily they grow out of the latter and picture taking becomes a easier task Mommy! He really is a happy baby...so happy in fact I had to wait for a pause in the giggling to take the shot!

This sweet little thing came down with a fever not long after I started shooting...such a trooper she was that I managed to get a few 'keepers' before she popped off to bed for a well earned rest!. 8 Days Old...

I spent the most glorious day today with the most glorious newborn baby girl! Introducing 8 day old baby H. Oh my goodness, she was a perfect little peanut! I'm so happy I was given the opportunity to do this shoot, it was long - very, very long but it wasn't really my fault...she was so well behaved and cooperative that it would've been irresponsible of me not to keep shooting! So many times we thought we'd try something at the risk of waking Little Miss. H. up but not a chance! Even when we wanted her awake, she would barely open her eyes! Her Mom thinks I'm some sort of freak baby whisperer now who somehow made her baby sleep naked for hours on end whilst bending her like a pretzel! 600 images later it was very hard to choose some to blog. I virtually had to close my eyes and point! Thanks Nikki for having me over, you're so great to work with! So are you a B/W girl or a color girl?

Something New and Something Old...

Boy I feel like I'm addicted to this blog these days! Tonight, well it's getting late again but I felt like taking a short break to get a cup of tea and to post. I love this old color, i think I need something similar in my own collection and for some reason i don't have any collages either...may have to make me one!

And can I just say to everyone who's written to me "Thank you" for your comments and your compliments! We all know how good it feels to get one but I think artists in particular need the validation a friendly pat of the back provides - especially when it's not your Mum or Dad telling you!! :-)

I know I could be off doing any number of jobs...we all could, but I choose this one. I choose five hours of sleep a night. I choose to sacrifice time with my family to indulge in what I love. I have such a great time when friends let me run off on a wonderful photographic adventure full of fun and fanciness with their kids. Most of all I love seeing and hearing about how much they cherish the gift of the past captured. My friends are some of my biggest cheerleaders. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. I am humbled and I am happy.

Life's tough for a Kindergardener let me tell you! Imagine after spending the whole entire three hour morning at school only to be told you have to go to the park for MORE playing, lots a great food and some face painting. Oh, and you have to do an easter egg hunt too. Bummer. Katie made out! we had a great day, Mummy was beyond exhausted from standing in the sun since 7.30am but it was worth it! The Funniest Thing Happened...

NOT!!! Oh My Gosh! I was sooo embarrassed! As I was shooting the girls coming down the slide the other day there was a really nice gal standing beside me who had commented on how she's love to do that with her son but didn't know how to change the settings on her camera. "I'll do it" (when will I learn?) I said! So I changed her camera around to shoot this one picture...it's not how you'd shoot most other pictures and I was so excited to have her try it out until...the battery on her camera ...yes...died! Oh, My Gosh!! (I had to say it again!!) I'm standing there with the sweetest lady who has no idea what I've just done to her lifeline between the past and the present and I can't change it all back for her! Jennifer, if you still want me to touch it (hmmm!) please contact me and I'll meet up with you! In the mean tim here's you're little guy...adorable (by the way how exactly does one catapult down such a steep, slippery slide, fly off the end and land on one's heiny so gracefully? I know I for one wouldn't be smiling! I have these digital files here waiting for you if you'd like them...hey, I have to redeem my conscience and every Mom should have a picture of their baby on the slide!

Jennifer I also have this shot of Miss A. as she walked past my lens during the "slide" shot. Perhaps you could have her Mom contact me so I can send her a copy.

I almost forgot about these two! I NEVER post this much from a session. But the relationship between these two was there. They know they're friends, everyone else knows they're friends but I've never seen them this vulnerable with each other. It was beautiful. It was pure friendship. You go girls!

I want to say to my wonderful Miss. K the biggest THANK YOU! She's ALWAYS willing to come and check out a location with me - sometimes several times a day. The first thing she usually asks is..."Are we only going to take one picture today Mummy?" and she knows the answer when I immediately start giggling or unfortunately on some occasions ooze ungratefulness. I love you with all my heart baby girl and cherish every photo I've ever taken of you (If I could delete a 1/4 my hard drive would be fine!) I had to post this...it was the first photo of this particular day and right after her now famous words...

P.S. I DO pay her well! She asked for $100 to do the SPARKLE! shoot and I thought her college account could use it! :-)

I ALWAYS love going on shoots and I love even more coming back and taking a better look at what I got. I see a lot of really cute kids, I think every child has beauty and I love trying to see what makes them sparkle. My most favorite thing is when a picture takes my breath away or brings a little tear to my eye and it's because I know I made that all important connection. It usually happens when the subject is someone I'm pretty close to...as with Miss. C. I see her almost every day and today us girls went out on a little adventure - and of course I took my camera along! She's definitely a blue eyed beauty and today it was her time to shine...

I Don't Think It Works If You're Tongue's Not Hanging Out!

I love seeing the kids have this much fun! I don't know if it was the beer I had at lunch time (for St. Patty's Day of course!) or that I'm feeling guilty about how little I post of Baby r, but I kind of went crazy on him here :-) He's so cute but he rarely lets me take his picture...he's always moving - FAST! So I decided to capture him in one of his FAST modes!! Happy St. Pat's Day! Enjoy!! As a side note, I'd like to point out to Sir Lancelot that Baby R. although wearing a size four is still only 2 1/2 and not only has 3 dozen binky's/pacifier's/dummy's, but also has two teddies and two blankies! He needs all three to function so I don't plan on getting rid of any one of them any time soon so..."rasberry" to you!! however, I have to say I love that he doesn't actually have any in these pictures!!

It was [quite] a few years ago now that I met my husband in Ireland, a most beautiful and spectacular wee country close to my heart. It was at a wonderful event that has changed my life quite profoundly. This past weekend I was honored to be a special guest at the 25th Anniversary of the Southern California Rose of Tralee Debutante Ball and St.Patricks Day Grand Ball. It was a most amazing and special night for me because my beautiful, shy and very tiny "six & a HALF" year old daughter was given some of the same opportunities so long ago. It was her first year as a "Rosebud" which is a program that allows little girls to be involved in celebrating their Irish heritage They are the hope for the future for one day they too might become a representative of Ireland. At the Grand Ball, the Rosebud class witness the wonder of being a "Rose". They have full access to the behind the scenes goings on's and the Roses generously, and carefully take them under their wing. Back to the gift...I watched in amazement as my daughter who sometimes has a great deal of trouble saying hello to her own friends, walk on stage time after time after time. She was interviewed, she provided interview questions for the Roses and she escorted the 2007 reigning Rose down a runway and off the stage all the while under 2 hugh spotlights. I watched her dance for hours...with strangers. I even watched her sing the YMCA into the microphone. So I am so very grateful that this program that helps women of all ages to celebrate life and be confident and poised and caring and happy, exists. I've included all the best [shots of Little Miss K.] parts of the night. I had to include a picture of my always stunning sister-in-law - you'll be able to tell which one, and one of our children...which includes Baby R. since his babysitter caught the stomach flu and cancelled last minute!

First off, I have to say yes, the girls wore a couple more changes of clothed during the shoot but I just love these pettiskirts, they move so beautifully and are a joy to photograph (but only when they contain a child :-)

More about Miss. T. You wouldn't know it from this FABULOUS sprint she performed (pictured below) but she had the hardest time walking on the gravel barefoot (pictured below). I don't know why, I mean, don't we all run barefoot on gravel without wincing? Just kidding T. you were a trooper! A box of Hello Kitty bandaids are on the way!!

One Of Those Weekends...

Do you ever have those weekends where you know you have a lot going on but as it's unfolding you realize you've grossly underestimated the time required for such tasks??? For instance popping out to a quick brunch and returning at 4pm. Or making the list of 100 or so errands that HAVE to be run same day and your babysitter doesn't show up so you manage um...2. Well it seems the whole of last week went this way for me. I had a really fun shoot on Thursday afternoon and honestly thought I'd be well on my way to a gallery by now but am so sorry to report Rebecca that I'm not. I had grand intentions to say the least! I have put this special, extra long post together though, in the hopes it will keep you going! Little Miss J. and her older sister Miss T. had quite to time at our shoot. We encountered ladybugs and a variety of other beetles, little green thingy's poked into a brick, lots of pretty flowers and, a stinging nettle which I had unknowingly volunteered to find out if they really do sting or not - they do (and none of us will forget what you look like you nasty little beast!). What color did you say that skirt was?...

This year I've made a serious attempt to improve my Photoshop knowledge and have to say I've learned some pretty fun techniques. Check out this image. I started with a bland black and white (the original color you can see is pretty pink). The goal was to restore all the color from a black & white image...and to change the color of the clothing and eyes from their original. It HAD to be convincing! Can you tell I'm quite proud of myself?! And of course this is something I'll be using SO frequently! Hmmm...I don't think so! It was fun though!

Shooting this maternity session this morning had me thinking of old times! How I'd love to have a baby in my belly again. K was so beautiful. She radiated throughout the entire session and she was so easy to work with that I didn't want to send her home! Big brother was the sweetest little guy. I know I witness my kids being very loving toward me at home but it's so sweet to witness this as it's happening to someone else...you get to see what it looks like!

I had so much fun wasting my time on this image! I have been polishing up on my photoshop skills and this collage was what came out of it this week! If you scroll down, you can see the original image of Miss K. that was the beginnings of all this...without the field flowers in the grass and in Katie's hand, and without the extra blades of grass, bushes, transparent wings and I can't forget the subtle shadows of the kids which weren't there on such an overcast shooting day! I hope you have a little laugh at my two little baby bugs!

However Did That Brick Wall Move?

Side note...do you see where Speedy K. had a run in with a brick wall? It's the little red spot above her left eye. She say's it "just jumped out" in front of her! We thankfully avoided two stitches in trade for some 'watch out for the wall - ouch' glue!

Location, Location, Location...

OH MY GOSH! I never thought I'd find such a beautiful spot! This is a location I've been dreaming about for what seems like forever! Can I just tell you how much I appreciate my family and my job for a minute...if it weren't for them I probably would've chosen to sleep in today because it was the perfect overcast, cold day - and I need the sleep! And if it weren't for this wonderful opportunity to have a family and the career I've thought about so often, I wouldn't have travelled so far for some outdoor family time! We really enjoyed ourselves and I can't wait to show you more client pictures here.

Box Padding...

Today I'd really like to oblige friends, family and clients who ask me for photography tips. One of the biggest and best ones I have is to take the padding out of your camera box, it usually has the name/model of the camera you've just bought boldly typed on the front - sometimes called a manual - and read it from front to back. Am I being funny? Yes and no. It really does have a lot of very good information in it that can improve your picture taking substantially. Now I would dearly love to teach everyone about their personal camera but since there are over 100 different models on the market right now that just seems a little overwhelming! But I did want to include two photos for comparison purposes. Both of these images are SOOC (straight out of camera) which means the only alterations that have been made pertains to uploading to my blog. I actually like both images as they are but the point is, you don't have to shoot your images using the factory settings on your camera. It's fantastic, you can enter into your camera's menu and press a few buttons and there you have it, a much more saturated, dramatic image of a floral heart shaped wreath from Valentines Day that I have failed to take down (almost a week later)...I hope at least some of you will try this, as boring as it may sound I think you'll appreciate the results.

Hi Everyone! I have been playing around on blogger to try and get more out of this system and I found an e-mail option - so I thought I'd give it a go! I love these girls, Little Miss H and Little Miss J. I met them and their Mum when I was coaching Miss H in soccer a couple of seasons ago. I didn't find out until the end of the season that her Mum is also a children's photographer, a very talented one. Since then we've become great friends. I got to lay in bed and watch some TVO while my fabulous husband brought me a steaming hot cup of tea! and now I'm waiting on calls for a newborn AND a twin baby session for later today. I thought I'd also pop over to the mall and do a little shopping for myself so I don't have to bother with the laundry (just kidding!) before I leave for my workshop on Friday! I'm so excited and I can't wit to show you all the new tricks I'm going to be learning! In the meantime, I'm trying to do a little posting. Can I start by saying today was really great day! Firstly, I was taking pictures! Secondly, I was so excited to shoot the new publicity shots for SPARKLE ~ It's the girliest party around! Katie was asked to play the role of the "birthday Girl" at the shoot and she loved it. She asked me later if we can "do another SPARKLE shoot tomorrow"! It was a really busy morning, lots of people and lost of sparkles! These two women are such an inspiration, not only are they beautiful and smart, they're Mommy's and they're succeeding in business. This is my guy, my true love. Isn't he handsome! He's the man I moved here for and he's wonderful. Without his love and support I wouldn't be a photographer. He's got a fantastic sense of humor (remember Botox Daddy?) and he works more than anyone I know...for us. Of course none of us are perfect, we all leave things lying around from time to time :-) and there are days we want to lay around ourselves. He's there for me when I need him though and that's comforting. I wouldn't exchange him for the world! Thanks for the girls night out honey, I love you.

Me! Me! Me!

Well It's about time you all had a chance to see who I am. I actually don't like to have my picture taken and no picture is ever good enough to show so I'm taking a leap here into unknown territory! I think most of you who meet me think I'm a very outgoing person. I guess in a lot of ways I am but I think (and I guess I would know) a lot of my "outgoing" personality is there because I never wanted attention for being shy or quiet. I couldn't be perceived as weak. Growing up, well I don't know if that wouldn't have worked so well.
These were taken in Chicago last year. It was a fantastic trip. Actually it was a turning point in my life. I realized a lot about myself and after some frightening news over the past year I knew now was quite possibly the only chance I'd have to go for my dreams. I know that tomorrow may not always be there at least not as I know it today. I realized I'm not immortal, for the very first time. Yep, it was definitely a turning point for me and I'm more fulfilled now than ever because of it. My husband - WOW an unbelievable man. I couldn't be a photographer without him. My babies, the two most wonderful and amazing gifts I've ever received. Family and friends, that's what it's all about. I want to wish all of my clients a Happy, Healthy and Safe New Year, and many more to come. Until next time

I love that Little Miss K. has her front tooth hanging by a thread - it's been this way all week but she refuses to pop it out! She's been on a liquid diet but has recently decided that avoiding food all together will help avoid the pain she has when she eats! Yes, you could call me and enabler - our fridge is stocked with items that can be eaten through a straw! The part of me that want's to make an apple her only option just isn't convincing enough so I'll baby her and encourage and support her as much as she needs and let nature take its course. I think she's trying to wait until Christmas Eve so the Tooth Fairy and Father Christmas can come on the same night!

I'm so happy I haven't had the time to shoot my own family portrait yet (although I think subconsiously I was hoping to avoid it since my kids don't find me as cinvincing as all of your kids do!!). I love my job and can't imagine doing anything else. So, for allowing me the opportunity to see you laugh or cry tears of joy when you see your photographs I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Great news, I'm pretty much booked through the end of the year and Christmas card shoots are almost complete with only one afternoon of appointments left to do!
